Locations

The locations we have chosen to work in are all close to the communities where our volunteers live —so when you are helping to improve the landscape, you can have the satisfaction of knowing that you can revisit the sites and check on their progress (and even show your friends and relatives what you have achieved).

Our current locations include:

Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve (formerly Sherwood Forest Country Park)

In 2002, Sherwood Forest Country Park became a National Nature Reserve in recognition of the rarity of its ancient oaks and the ecosystem they support. In fact, there has been woodland continuously present here since the ice age. The site attracts thousands of people each year who come to visit the famous Major Oak, the legendary hiding place of Robin Hood and his Merry Men.

The Robin Hood Way

The Robin Hood Way was the first long-distance footpath in Britain. At 105 miles long it starts at Nottingham Castle and ends at Edwinstowe Church, taking in many historical sites, including the very famous Major Oak. The route is marked by distinctive green bow and arrow markers.

Site partner: Nottinghamshire County Council

Various locations managed by The Forestry Commission (East Midlands)

In the southernmost part of our area we are working in Blidworth, Thieves and Nomanshill Woods. Towards the north of our area we are working in Sherwood Pines Country Park , an extensive forest of mainly conifers and heathland, and a great place to experience outdoor adventure.

As our project continues we plan to add more sites to our list, so keep an eye out for our volunteers in a countryside location near you…
